In order to fulfill both of one of the missions –which is related to apply the knowledge and results of Japanese language, literature, and cultural research to social life– and desire to improve the quality of public knowledge, several lecturers of Japanese Literature study program held community service activities in accordance with their scientific fields.
One of the service activities is the one entitled “MEMBANGUN KREATIFITAS SISWA MELALUI WORKSHOP PEMBUATAN KOMIK”, or Building Students’ Creativity through the Comics Making Workshop in English. Carried out by Agus Budi Cahyono, M.Lit., Emma Rahmawati Fatimah, M.A., Ni Made Savitri Paramita, M.A., and Retno Dewi Ambarastuti, M.Sc., this was inspired by the high interest of the people of Malang on comics. This can be seen from the insignificant number of local comic artists, where students from the Study Program of Japanese Literature also take part in it. This activity was held in the form of a workshop, with the main objective of providing a forum for high school students in the city of Malang and surrounding areas to develop their talents and interests in comics / manga.
This activity was held on Sunday, September 1, 2019, in Hall B, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya. The activity was in the form of workshops making comics on a digital platform, or often known as Webtoon. Two comic artists and webtoonists as practitioners in the field of local comics, Satria Wahyu Pradana – better known as Satriwara – and Mas Hiro, were invited as presenters. Both have created several works and actively upload their works through digital platforms, which are Instagram and Webtoon.
Other service activity carried out by the lecturers is IbM SEBAGAI SARANA MEMOTIVASI SISWA SMANĀ 1 BLITAR UNTUK MELANJUTKAN PENDIDIKAN BAHASA JEPANG DI PERGURUAN TINGGI, or in English, IbM as a Means of Motivating Students of Blitar 1 High School to Pursue Japanese Language Education in Higher Education. This activity was conducted by Santi Andayani, MA, Dewi Puspitasari, M.Hum., Nadya Inda Syartanti, M. Si., And Eka Marthanty Indah Lestari, M.Sc .. This activity was attended by 81 (eighty one) students, teacher representatives, the principal of Blitar 1 High School, and was carried out at Blitar 1 High School.
