COVID-19 pandemic that has been going on for 2 years caused the postponement of JLPT for the Japanese language learners that is usually held every year. This case also happened to the students of SPJL FCS UB. This test is essential as a way to measure the students’ Japanese language skill after studying Japanese for a long time.
After going on a hiatus for around 2 years, the Study Programme of Japanese Literature is now back to pushing their students to take the test. In order to observe the result of JLPT that has been done by their students, the Study Programme created a map of Japanese language skill of all the students who have or have not taken the test.
Mapping is done through Google Form filling (https://forms.gle/cBsmKvriR4PNQPeGA), in August 2023 (Odd Semester 2023/2024), and in February 2024 (Even Semester 2023/2024). Mapping aims to understand students’ Japanese skills based on the level of JLPT. From this mapping, the Study Programme will be able to supervise further in order to maximize the potential and achieve the target level of minimum N3 and or even the highest, N1.
ODD SEMESTER
From the total of 515 active students at SPJL, 375 students have filled the questionnaire. The survey result shows that from 515 active students, it is identified that 199 students have obtained JLPT certification from N5 to N1. This success shows the commitment and high achievement from the students, as well as reflecting the quality of education that has been provided while preparing to face this internationally acknowledged-Japanese language test.

EVEN SEMESTER
Mapping results of SPJL students per February 2024 (Even semester 2023/2024) shows a satisfying outcome. The students’ self-consciousness to fill the questionnaire and updating data helps. From the mapping results, it can be seen that the number of qualified students has increased. In this period there was an increasing number of passing students from 199 to 313 (a 22% growth). The passing rates include all levels, N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1. Overall the passing rate reached 61%.
Recapitulation of JLPT Data on Japanese Literature Students for the Period of February 2024 Furthermore, the Study Programme has planned activities to push the students who have JLPT certificate with benkyoukai activities by prioritizing 93 N4 students preparing for N3, 83 students who have passed N3 to prepare for N2, and 17 N2 students in order to achieve N1. Students who have obtained N5 certificate will be facilitated in their development through practical activities in the Skills Course.
