PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
The educational philosophy of Study Programme of Japanese Language & Cultural Studies (SPJLCS) cannot be separated from UB’s educational philosophy, namely “entrepreneurship”, a notion of competence in the field of certain knowledge and having creativity and innovation in generating job. The philosophy is then adopted into the FCS, DLL, and SPJLCS. This philosophy is also stated in the FCS Strategic Plan (Renstra) and has been confirmed by the FCS Senate Meeting. The philosophy will inspire and guide the learning process in SPJLCS.
In more detail, SPJLCS philosophy is that programme is not only committed to produce graduates who are qualified or competent in terms of knowledge and science in accordance with the demands of the job market, but also dedicated to generate graduates who own entrepreneurial spirit – tough, independent, innovative – who are able to create their own jobs so that they can contribute to the society and economic life of their communities. SPJLCS motivates students to express their creative ideas by participating in Student Creativity Week activities. Coaching is done through interest groups that have been formed by students themselves with a lecturer acts as facilitator. Students can explore creative ideas that combine elements of Indonesian and Japanese culture in the products produced, such as handicraft products and culinary products. Students are also fostered to be able to manage these products. This experience will equip students in developing a scientific attitude, critical thinking, creative and innovative in seeing opportunities and challenges in social life later.
In line with UB’s educational philosophy, the FCS educational philosophy process is, furthermore, also directed at the nurturing of intelligent human resources who have good character and cultural traits. Furthermore, FCS as a faculty that organizes education in several foreign languages underlies its learning activities with the immersion approach by upholding a global philosophy without forsaking identity.
In order to realize immersion learning, FCS seeks an authentic learning environment by intensively involving students in mastering foreign languages and culture. Students are prepared to be able to absorb positive values within many languages, particularly here Japanese values so that the language and noble values of Indonesian culture remain and are maintained.
The philosophical values are then formally informed through the FCS’ Academic Handbook, which is disseminated online to the stakeholders, through the SPJLCS’s website (http://sastrajepang-fib.ub.ac.id/). Regularly, the management of the FCS will deliver the philosophy of education to the freshmen (MABA) through formal meetings, such as New Students/Freshmen Orientation Programme (PKKMABA) and Student Day activities. The Study Programme then also conducts socialization through SPJLCS students’ community activities, Jikoshokai, which are held annually.
