Sinergy Between the Study Programme of Japanese Literature (SPJL) and The Study Programme of Japanese Language Education (SPJLE) in Benkyokai Activity

Malang March 8th 2024- In effort to improve students and lecturer’s knowledge and skills, SPJL in collaboration with SPJLE held a series of benkyoukai activities. Benkyoukai is a learning forum which aims to broaden knowledge and polish skills in various aspects of Japanese language and literature. Some of the activities are called benkyoukai mombusho, benkyoukai kanji cup, benkyoukai speech competition and presentation, also benkyoukai N2 for students and N1 for lecturers.

Benkyoukai Mombusho

Benkyoukai Mombusho is a learning forum to help its participants prepare to pass Mombusho test, which is a selection to acquire scholarship in Japan. This activity is designed to improve participants’ Japanese language skills whether it is speaking, reading, writing and listening. SPJL and SPJLE students who joined this competition will discuss and prepare themselves with mombusho test questions.

Benkyoukai Kanji Cup

Benkyoukai Kanji Cup aims to train the students’ Kanji writing and reading to prepare them to compete in the Kanji Cup. In this benkyoukai, students were given understanding about Kanji characters, reading method and correct writing. Benkyoukai Kanji Cup is not only attended by students from SPJL but also students from SPJLE.

Benkyoukai Speech and Presentation Competition

Benkyoukai Speech and Presentation Competition was attended by both SPJL and SPJLE students to prepare themselves for the speech and presentation competition held by institutions such as Japan Foundation, Takushoku University, Hiroshima University, Takudai Unsada and so on.

This Benkyoukai activity was taught directly by native speakers to train participants in demonstrating speech and presentation with proper gestures. Through this benkyoukai, participants were also taught the correct hatsuon (tone) while speaking in public. Moreover, they also practiced to respond to questions from the judges in a proper and confident manner so that they will give a good impression.

Benkyoukai N2 Students

This activity was held in order to increase the number of students who have JLPT N2 certification. SPJL provides opportunities to join this Benkyoukai for free. In this program, participants will be given JLPT N2 exam questions under direct instruction of native speakers.

This benkyoukai has been operated for the last 5 years. However, because of the pandemic, this activity has been on hold and this year, will be reopened for SJPLC and SPJLE students who have obtained N3 certification. This program is free of charge and will be held twice a year for 2 to 3 months before the JLPT test in July and December. It will be carried out in the beginning of April and September. It is hoped that the number of students who obtained N2 certificates will increase as an outcome for this activity.

Benkyoukai Lecturer

Not only students, lecturers and teaching staff also have the opportunity to join Benkyoukai with native speakers in order to improve the quality of Japanese language teaching. Besides, this benkyoukai also aims to prepare lecturers before taking N1 certification. This activity includes discussions of JLPT N1 exam questions and quick strategies in understanding the JLPT test.
